After a frantic year at work, it is now time to disconnect and relax. So even if flying to distant lands may seem tempting, you can also perfectly escape from your daily routine within a few hour drive from home. Summer is finally here!
Far from the crowds, there are many activities to enjoy in the Ardennes or Luxembourg in summer: we know them for their luscious nature, but did you know that cultural and foodie activities are also very reknown in the area? Now, what if summer also meant discovering new things? Our Forest Village Nutchel Les Ardennes finds itself at the crossroads of all these possibilities, and is the ideal starting point for a family micro-adventure or a romantic weekend.
What are the best activities to do in the Ardennes and Luxembourg as a couple in summer?
Go on a cycling tour in nature to Bastogne (start from the forest village): Rent a normal or e-bike at Nutchel Les Ardennes and leave for a sporty day-long trip along the RAVel that will bring you to Bastogne, passing by the nicest natural landscapes of the Luxembourg province.
Take a gentle hike in the Anlier forest (5 min drive): Witness the nature awakening from the inside, as you walk in the forests which cover the Ardennes hills, just of the two of you.
Visit the Feudal Castle of La-Roche-en-Ardennes (40 min drive, Belgium): Go back in time and discover the ruins of the famous feudal castle which overlooks the charming little town of La Roche-en-Ardenne. In summer, several shows are organized (archery and crafts, falconry shows, storytelling...)
Go kayaking or paddleboarding on the Semois River (40-60 minutes drive, Belgium): Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler, the Semois is the river of choice for kayaking. Starting from Chiny or Alle-sur-Semois, discover the Belgian Ardennes from a whole new perspective as you glide along its winding, peaceful waters. And why not combine this activity with a visit to Bouillon or Rochehaut?
What are the best activities to do in the Ardennes and Luxembourg with friends in summer?
Swim at Lac de la Haute-Sûre (20 min drive, Luxembourg): Stay cool in summer and go for a dip in one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, only a few minutes away from Nutchel Les Ardennes. You can even rent a small boat to spend a day on the water.
Beer tastings at local breweries (30–45 min drive, Belgium): Visit small craft breweries in Belgium or Luxembourg and discover the taste of the season.
Visit the Bock Casemates and Luxembourg City (50 min drive): Venture deep into the Bock Casemates and uncover Luxembourg’s hidden fortress secrets on a guided tour. After finding your way back to the surface (or not...), enjoy strolling in the capital city of the Great Duchy of Luxembourg
Hike to the Burfelt Belvedere (20 min drive, Luxembourg): Go for an easy and scenic walk leading to one of the most stunning viewpoints in the region. Overlooking the Upper Sure Lake, the Burfelt Belvedere is perfect for highly Instagrammable photos or a good picnic with friends and an unforgettable view.
What are the best activities to do in the Ardennes and Luxembourg as a family in summer?
L'Asinerie de l'O (20 min drive, Belgium): How cool could be going on a hike with a donkey? During summer, you are welcome to book a walk with a donkey through and come to visit this local donkey farm.
Les Mystères d'Esch-sur-Sûre (20 min drive, Luxembourg): Discover the history of Esch-Sauer with an interactive sound experience and immerse yourself in the mysterious past and present of the small town.
Visit the themed walks at the Vallée de la Haute‑Sûre Tourist Office (10 min drive, Belgium): Wander through budding woods and discover mushrooms, stags and legend-laden trails hand-in-hand with little explorers.
Sweet stops in Esch-sur-Sûre or Bastogne (30–35 min drive): End the day with an ice cream or some Luxembourgish pastries in a cosy café.
What are the best activities to do in the Ardennes and Luxembourg with a dog in summer?
Forest walks in the Anlier Forest (10–20 min drive, Belgium): The endless forest trails, streams, and wildlife make this place a paradise for dogs, for them to run freely, sniff the leaves, and enjoy nature.
Lakeside walks (25 min drive, Luxembourg): Stroll along the Lac de la Haute-Sûre, and discover nice points of views together with your dog.
Cabin time together: At Nutchel, dogs are part of the adventure. Imagine sipping hot tea on your terrace while your four-legged friend naps after a long walk. Are you ready for the best holidays with your dog?
And what are the best activities to do at Nutchel in summer, if you don't want to take your car?
Summer in the Ardennes is the perfect invitation to explore the great outdoors. Whether you’re wandering through wildlife parks, tasting craft beers, or exploring forests, each day ends back in your Nutchel cosy cabin — with candlelight, the warmth of a wood stove, and the simple joy of being surrounded by nature. And if you simply want to stay around, here is a list of small things to do while at Nutchel Les Ardennes:
Fishing in the Sûre river: The Sûre river which runs along our domain is no exception to the countless other rich-in-fish rivers in the Belgian Ardennes. Buy your fishing license at the reception, and set up your fishing gear to try and catch the biggest fish of them all! The summer quietness will appease your soul and give you a much-needed boost.
Go on an outdoor scavenger hunt in the woods: gather your friends or kids and head into the woods to discover nature's treasures. Search for pinecones, acorns, or the most beautiful gems. Not only this is a fun activity but also a great way to connect with your surroundings and appreciate the beauty of nature.
Listen to the sounds of nature from your hot tub at night: Imagine immersing yourself in the warm and soothing waters of a private hot tub, surrounded by the natural beauty of the sleeping Ardennes forests and the fresh summer air. Sounds relaxing, doesn't it?
Enjoy a summer barbecue: our Cosy Cabins are equipped with everything you need to whip up delicious, summer-inspired dishes. And if you don't want to over-prepare something, we have delicious food packages, including a tasty barbecue to grill on our Weber gas barbecue!
Grill marshmallows on the campfire and prepare s'mores together with the other Nutchel guests in the evening.
